How to Ask Your Employer About Career Development and Progression

Are you feeling stuck in your current role and unsure about your next career move? In our latest newsletter, we share tips on how to have that important conversation with your employer about advancing your career. Let’s help you take the next step forward!

Prepare for the Conversation

Before approaching your employer, take some time to reflect on your career goals and how they align with the company's objectives. Consider the following:

  • What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
  • How have you contributed to the company so far?
  • What specific skills or experiences do you need to achieve your career goals?

Is it the right time?

Timing is key when it comes to discussing career progression. You can request a meeting with your manager during a time when they are not overwhelmed with other tasks, or after a period where you have completed many successful projects. Ensure the setting is private and conducive to a candid conversation.

Be Clear and Specific

When you initiate the conversation, be clear about your intentions. Outline your career goals and express your desire for career development within the company. Use specific examples of your accomplishments to demonstrate your readiness for progression.

Example: “Hi [Manager's Name], I’d like to discuss my career development within the company. Over the past year, I’ve [mention specific achievements], and I’m eager to take on more responsibilities and grow within my role.”

Ask for Feedback

It is important to understand what the employer thinks about your performance. Therefore, during the meeting, you can seek constructive feedback on your performance and areas where you can improve. This shows your willingness to learn and grow, and it can provide valuable insights into what you need to focus on to advance your career.

Example: “Could you provide feedback on my performance and areas where I can improve? I want to ensure I’m on the right track and making meaningful contributions to the team.”

Discuss Development Opportunities

Ask about specific development opportunities that can help you achieve your career goals. This could include training programs, mentorship, taking on new projects, or even exploring different roles within the company.

Example: “What opportunities are available for professional development? Are there any training programs or projects that I could get involved in to build my skills and advance my career?”

Express Your Commitment

Show your dedication to the company and your willingness to invest in your professional growth. Emphasize that your career progression will not only benefit you but also contribute to the success of the team and the company.

Example: “I’m committed to growing within the company and contributing to our success. I believe that with the right development opportunities, I can add even more value to the team.”

Follow Up

After the meeting, follow up with a thank-you note and a summary of the discussion. This demonstrates your professionalism and keeps the conversation on the employer’s radar.

Example: “Thank you for taking the time to discuss my career development. I appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to explore growth opportunities within the company. I look forward to our continued collaboration.”

If you want to know your career prospects within the current organisation, don't feel afraid to approach your employer about career development and progression. By presenting your achievements, expressing your goals, seeking feedback, and discussing opportunities, you can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career path.
